ABSTRACT

Abstract Introduction: Epiphytes (vascular and non-vascular) are one of the most diverse groups in the Neotropics, but despite their importance in the functioning of many ecosystems, much of their taxonomy and ecology is still unknown in the dry forest of Colombia. Objective: To compare the diversity patterns and species composition of vascular and non-vascular epiphytes along tropical dry forest remnants of Cauca Valley, Colombia. Methods: Ten permanent plots (50 x 20 m2) were established in tropical dry forest remnants. The epiphytes were sampled in 40-50 trees per plot. Alpha and gamma diversity were calculated using the richness (q0) and Shannon index (q1) (alpha was estimated as the average for phorophytes). Beta diversity was measured using the Whitaker index. To evaluate the relationship between diversities and environmental variables, GLM analysis was used. Results: We found 50 morphospecies of vascular epiphytes, 77 of bryophytes and 290 of lichens. The 𝛼 and 𝛾 diversity of bryophytes from each remnant was significantly explained by temperature. The abundance of lichens per tree was significantly related with the DBH and tree height of each remnant. The 𝛼 diversity of vascular epiphytes shown can be explained by temperature and precipitation. The 𝛾 diversity was strongly influenced by the beta diversity in bryophytes and lichens. This pattern is because the sites with high disturbance present a lower diversity, as a consequence of a homogenizing effect, that is, a low turnover of species between sampling units. Conclusions: Precipitation and temperature affected the diversity of bryophytes and vascular epiphytes, while it did not show a relationship with the lichen's diversity, for which there is not a high congruence between the diversity and composition of these epiphytes.

ABSTRACT

the text seeks to expand the boundaries of the concept of "global bioethics," the core of Van Rensselaer Potter's theoretical proposal on "ecological bioethics" in his work Global Bioethics, in the face of the "ethics of the Earth" developed by the ecologist and environmentalist Aldo Leopold and the analysis of "ecosophy" raised by the philosopher and psychoanalyst Félix Guattari in The Three Ecologies. This characterization is proposed to establish theoretical assumptions around the notions of ecological bioethics and ecosophy from the perspective of global bioethics in a renewed attempt to broaden its disciplinary horizons. Three moments are established for the analysis: initially, the land ethics proposed by Arnold Leopold in his work A Sand County Almanach is characterized. Subsequently, the main aspects of "ecological ethics" in Global Bioethics are analyzed. Finally, several aspects of Félix Guattari's ecosophy are highlighted that put into perspective the ecological accent of Potter's global bioethics, which could be considered valid divergent presuppositions to enrich global bioethics today.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Coral-reef communities are considered one of the most biodiverse, but also most threatened, marine ecosystems, and the accelerating loss of habitat over the past decades warrants active intervention. Objective: The present study demonstrates the successful implementation of a low-impact restoration technique in three Central Mexican Pacific degraded coral communities, using a protocol based on natural fragmentation (''fragments of opportunity") of the branching coral Pocillopora spp., considered the most abundant and primary carbonate-producing coral species of the Eastern Tropical Pacific. Methods: The restoration program was implemented in two offshore and one inshore coraline areas. The relationships between seawater temperature and coral survival, growth, and attachment rate were assessed over one year, with 183 fragments monitored each month. Results: The mean coral growth rate was 3.3 ± 0.1 mm mo-1, with annual growth rates in length and width of 39.9 ± 14.2 and 36.5 ± 19.5 mm yr-1, respectively. Self-attachment efficiency was 78 % and the survival rate was high (84 %). The growth rate differed significantly among reefs. Conclusions: Upon monitoring directly fragmented corals over a year, growth rates were deemed high enough to merit active restoration in the region. However, our data show that structural and abiotic differences and seasonal variability must be considered overall in successful long-term coral community restoration initiatives in the eastern Pacific region.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Associated fauna comprises most of the diversity of a coral reef and performs ecological functions essential to the reef's survival. Since Pocillopora corals harbor an important associated fauna, reef restoration efforts are underway in Golfo Dulce, Costa Rica, to preserve them. Objective: To describe changes in cryptofauna and fish communities associated with Pocillopora colonies to better understand the succession of associated fauna following transplantation. Methods: An experimental patch of 30 nursery-grown Pocillopora colonies and a control patch containing no colonies were monitored for 8 months following transplantation in Golfo Dulce. Cryptofauna within each colony and fish within each patch were observed using SCUBA to quantify temporal changes in the abundance, diversity, and community structure of the colonies. Results: The abundance and diversity of cryptofauna increased throughout the experiment. Obligate symbiont decapods were the most abundant. The composition of the community of cryptofauna differed between periods with fish in the genus Scarus as the main contributor to any differences. The increase in abundance and diversity of cryptofauna and fish may reflect coral growth and the corresponding availability of space and environmental complexity in the experimental patch. The composition of the cryptofauna communities was generally consistent with other studies. However, a high density of decapod symbionts could suggest that without other Pocillopora colonies to move to, they may crowd together despite their aggressive tendencies. Conclusions: Pocillopora colonies will experience an increase in symbionts that could positively contribute to the health and survival of the coral following transplantation.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT The interview conducted in 1998 with Kerr L. White (1917-2014) is presented, translated into Spanish. White, an economist, epidemiologist, statistician, general physician, and health advocate, was highly critical of the separation between research, clinical practice, epidemiology, public health, and health policies. He was one of the pioneers in healthcare services research. His primary concern was society's responsibility to allocate healthcare resources in the most appropriate way to improve the health of populations. White's work critically addresses the absence of a population perspective in epidemiology applied to healthcare services and systems, and the lack of evaluation of the social and economic impact of practices. He also highlights the dehumanization of care processes. Despite being undercited in health literature, we reintroduce his figure with the aim of disseminating the relevance of his thoughts and contributions.

ABSTRACT

Abstract: In this article, through a literature review, we discuss ecology based on the standard category of capital reproduction, highlighting the dialectic between value and use-value. We conclude, based on TMD, that the standard category of capital reproduction enables the understanding of ecology within the realm of particularity, demonstrating that valorization is always accompanied by material production and that different patterns of capital reproduction unevenly impact the environment and society.

ABSTRACT

Abstract This essay analyzes the socio-sanitary impacts exerted by the environment, incorporating the dynamics brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic and unveiling its repercussions. Countries that failed to prevent the virus spread and to established effective and collaborative intervention measures were hit the hardest. Environmental destruction reached new heights in the pandemic, as have the threats faced by its defenders, further aggravating the crisis. In this scenario one can highlight the risks posed to Brazilian Indigenous peoples and Latin American environmentalists; the emergence of dangerous groups; and the implementation of government policies with critical effects on environmental preservation that put traditional ways of life at risk. It is thus recognized that the planet faces not only a health crisis, but also a socioeconomic and environmental one. To overcome such heterogeneous crisis, efforts must be multifaceted, involving: caring for health and ecosystems; eliminating global poverty and sanitary inequality; reducing environmental risks; protecting traditional ways of life; defending democracies and human rights; and fostering sustainable development policies and international cooperation. These efforts will also affect the years to come, minimizing the risks of new pandemics and acting to preserve the environment.

ABSTRACT

Abstract The construction of highways is responsible for access to previously protected areas, resulting in changes in landscape and dynamics of the animal populations that live in these areas. These enterprises are the major responsible for the mortality of wild animals, surpassing hunting and even the trafficking of animals. The objective of this study was to make a list that reflects the diversity of amphibians and reptile's road-killed along the BR-040, a highway that crosses the threaten lowland Atlantic Forest in Southeastern region of Brazil, including the use of microhabitats, lifestyle, activity pattern, reproductive cycles, and possible rare or endangered species. The study area consists of 180,4 km of highways. Monitoring began in 2006 and continues to the present day. A total of 1,410 individuals from 60 species were recorded in this study. The reptiles were more frequent in number of individuals and species. The commonest species recorded were Crotalus durissus and Dipsas mikanii. We have registered a single endangered species: Ranacephala hogei. The highest rates of road-kill were recorded during the wet season. Road-kills of fauna is a major threat to species, studies are of great importance to define plans that seek to mitigate the effects generated by these enterprises.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Low biodiversity in urban areas is associated with habitat loss. However, the effects of urbanization on biodiversity should also consider the historical background of land-use, explored herein. Our goal was to evaluate changes in the assemblage of reptiles in an urban habitat over 100 years, aiming to identify which ecological attributes allowed the persistence of species that can be found in the area today. We accessed historical records in scientific collections and carried out fieldwork to access reptile assemblage in an urban green area, in São Paulo, Brazil. Considering land-use changes in the area, we defined three-time intervals between 1901 and 2020. We established species richness for each time interval, categorizing them into three ecological attributes: habitat preference, substrate use, and food habits. We recorded 27 reptile species from 1901 until 2020, 14 resulting from historical data, eight from both historical and fieldwork, and five species exclusively in fieldwork. Amphibians were also sampled during fieldwork, but not used in historical comparison. Reptile's species richness decreased 59% regardless of ecological attributes, and snakes were the group with most species' loss. Fossorial reptiles were the least affected group. We concluded that habitat loss culminated in a species richness decline, and the reptiles that remain until today were likely present since the fragment isolation. Ecological attributes of the remaining taxa include species that use terrestrial substrates and feed on prey commonly found in urban environments.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT: The crises that characterize our time mirror a civilizational crisis with roots in the monopoly of knowledge, in which the ways of knowing developed by scientific capitalism degrade the environment and subjugate knowledge built in the co-evolution of cultures with nature, territories and means of life. Technology and scientific innovations have taken a central role in today's society, mediating countless social, environmental and political relations hegemonized by contemporary colonial capitalism. In this essay, we seek to bring reflections on the relationships between the fields of energy and health which, in addition to manifesting successive crises, have been mobilizing the social imagination in recent years as they are governed by socio-technical systems that condition modern ways of life. Energy and health crises are addressed based on their historical constructions, the productive structures they mobilize, the ways of life they create and the social relations they order. We point to the mechanisms by which global circuits of capital export externalities towards populations with less access to mechanical energy available in their socio-technical systems, generating socio-environmental catastrophes, land expropriation, loss of biodiversity, climate change, pollution, poverty, famine and epidemics.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Temperature affects the body size of animals, which is an important trait in natural and sexual selection. Insects do not have complex mechanisms of temperature control, thus temperature changes affect their life aspects, from enzymatic reactions to behavior. The amount of fat stored by insects is also influenced by temperature and constitutes a tissue with biosynthetic and metabolic activity, acting as an energy reservoir. We assessed the effect of environmental temperature due to elevation and seasonal temperature variations on body size and condition of two dung beetles species: Canthon rutilans cyanescens and Dichotomius sericeus (Coleoptera: Scarabaeinae). Both species are abundant in southern Brazilian forests, but they differ in habits: the first is a diurnal roller whereas the later is a nocturnal tunneler. Summer months and sites with lower elevations and higher temperatures presented larger C. rutilans cyanescens. A linear relationship exists between body size and soil temperatures, whereas the temperature positively influences the body length. Furthermore, C. rutilans cyanescens from cooler sites had more body fat. Individuals of D. sericeus were also larger in summer months, however, we did not find differences in the proportion of fat or a relation between body size and temperature. Thus, the body size of dung beetle species varies in relation to temporal factors, as both species are larger in summer. More interesting was to observe that the species with a diurnal habit, even though smaller in colder places, has a higher proportion of fat, which indicates an evolutionary response to environmental pressure.

ABSTRACT

Objective@#To understand the current situation of suicidal ideation among middle school students in Taiyuan City and its correlation with exposure to social ecological risk factors, so as to provide a reference basis for exploring the causes of suicidal ideation among middle and high school students and formulating effective preventive measures.@*Methods@#A questionnaire survey was conducted among 2 639 middle school students in urban and rural areas of Taiyuan City by multistage stratified random cluster sampling, including general demography characteristics, social ecological risk factors and suicidal ideation. SPSS 26.0 software was used for Chi squared test and binary Logistic regression analysis.@*Results@#The overall detection rate of suicidal ideation was 24.7 %. There were statistically significant differences in the detection rate of suicidal ideation among middle school students in different gender, grade, family residence, maternal education level, perceived family economic conditions, number of close friends, self-perceived academic burden ( χ 2=38.17, 13.44, 10.77, 8.15, 19.76, 18.95, 59.75, P <0.05). After adjusting the general demography characteristics, the binary Logistic regression showed that moderate and high risk in the individual, family and cultural dimension, and high risk in the school dimension of the social ecology were all positively correlated with suicidal ideation among middle school students ( OR=1.38, 2.28, 1.97, 3.28, 1.48, 2.15, 1.71, P <0.05).@*Conclusion@#The suicidal ideation among middle school students is related to individuals, families, and schools in the social ecological microsystem, as well as the cultural environment in the macro system. It is necessary to conduct intervention in suicidal ideation at the individual, family, and school levels, meanwhile, strengthening social and cultural construction to reduce the impact of adverse factors on the mental health among adolescents.

ABSTRACT

Coprophagous and Xylophagous Coleopterans are equally impacted by the fragmentation of ecosystems and are recognized for their character as indicators of certain ecosystem functions, such as the recycling of organic matter and pollination. Thus, as part of the program to restore degraded ecosystems in protected areas and others sectors of the Bamingui-Bangoran Prefecture in the Central African Republic (CAR), an inventory of insect species according to their ecological profile is needed. Insects were collected over 8 hectares corresponding to 6 different habitats in the Bamingui-Bangoran park. Sixty different traps were installed in each habitat with 100 meters of distance between the traps. The measured parameters are the number of individuals collected per week. As results, 8 coleopteran families (4 Coprophagous families and 4 Xylophagous families) were identified. The Coprophagous and Xylophagous Coleopterans were much abounded in grassy savannahs with much mixing trees with Imperata cylindrica and in grassy and shrubby savannas with many flowering plants (Melliferous) and less abounded in grassy and shrubby savannahs domined by Imperata cylindrica. However, repartitions of individuals fit uniform distribution in all coleopteran families belonging to Xylophagous group whereas in Coprophagous, uniform distribution fit was established only for one family.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Introduction: Inventories are essential for forest management, but, in the Amazon region, the absence of standardization produces information loss, low accuracy, and inconsistent measurements. This prevents valid comparisons and compromises the use of information in networks and software. Sampling unit size is of key importance in the inventory of native forests, particularly regarding accuracy and costs. Objective: To identify a plot size that provides adequate precision for dendrometric parameters in the Amazon. Methods: In Cotriguaçu, Mato Grosso, Brazil, we tested four plot sizes with six repetitions each: 2 500, 5 000, 7 500, and 10 000 m². We measured diameter at breast height, population density, basal area, and biomass. We applied Shannon and Jaccard indexes; Weibull 2P and Gamma functions to fit the diametric distribution; and the Akaike Information Criterion for the best model. Results: There was a directly proportional relationship between plot area and population similarity, but diversity did not indicate significant alterations. Plot size did not affect dendrometric attributes and diametric distribution. Larger plot areas led to lower coefficients of variation and smaller confidence intervals. The Gamma function was the best model to represent the distributions of different plot sizes. Conclusions: For similar forests, we recommend the 2 500 m² plot to evaluate diameter at breast height, population density, basal area, and biomass.
